Good of the ORDER
Your
Vocation in Life
God made each of us for a special
purpose known only to Him. Nothing else matters except to accomplish that
divine purpose. Let us receive our Lord with devotion and do his will,
whatever that may be.
GRAND
KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
Brothers:
It gives me great joy to know that I can provide
service to my worthy brothers as Grand Knight. I remember well from the
initiation that a Grand Knight must depend on the pyramid of brothers to be
successful. In business circles, this is equivalent to understanding that
it is the team that makes an enterprise successful, not one individual. The
success of our council is dependent on the committees, and the committees
are dependent on the members. Accordingly, we will use the committees to
accomplish our work and provide our success.
Sal Giardina and I, as well as our new district deputy
Hank Sobon, recently attended the KC Leadership Seminar. The emphasis this
year, and introduced by Hank at the last council meeting, is SMILE.
Service, Membership, Initiative, Leadership, and Enthusiasm. Service is
what KC does. It does it with the members. KC takes the initiative,
provides Leadership, and does it with enthusiasm. We will be discussing the
calendar of events for the upcoming year. This is your opportunity to
SMILE.
We will be having the Knights Serving Wives dinner at
Vosbein Hall on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 6:30 PM. Steak, Potatoes,
Salad, and Dessert. Cost is $17.50 per ticket or 2 for $30. The sign up
sheet will be passed around at the Thursday, August 7, 2008 council
meeting. All are encouraged to sign up for this event.
We will also be circulating a sign up sheet for name
tags for those with new offices or needing to replace a lost name tag. We
will also discuss ordering new shirts. Shirts and tags are an essential
part of the visibility we need to project the KC image at St. Clement parish
and in the community.
See you at the Thursday evening meeting.

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE
By this time every Council
should have every one of their new officers installed or….. if they are
perfectly satisfied with the progress being made by everyone,….. then we
will pray for you.
There is an old time motto
which applies to every organization: to make the good better and the
better, best. If you are completely satisfied with the progress you are
making, then you are quickly approaching stagnation. Try something new or
try to get different members involved. Surprise the membership by asking
some of the old-timers to do something new or different.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
- Msgr Lorio reminded us about the sanctity of human
life…of the disregard for human life when abortions are committed…. of
the knights of St. Louis, King of France Council who meet every 3rd
Saturday in front of the abortion clinic on Ridge Lake Ave to protest
the tragedy of abortion. Suggests that the ED White Council also join
in protest.
- The Installation Dinner was held on July 12, 2008
at Vosbein Hall to honor our new officers and directors.
- Kevin joined our ranks at E.D. White on Wednesday,
June 18, via his 1st degree
at the St. Jerome Council hall (Matt Ventura, Degree Team leader). He
has also become the newest faculty member at Brother Martin High. The
faculty & staff are glad to welcome him to the English Department. All
brother knights are glad to hear this good news! - "Jeff" Elliot, PGK,
FDD.
- Congratulations to Hank Sobon, GK, who has been
selected as our next District Deputy.
- Bingo, for the senior residents of Colonial Oaks
on June 13 was well attended. The residents enjoyed the company of our
brother knights and the humor…. as numbers were called out by Karl
Marrero, John Capretto, Bobby Stevens and Sal Giardina. Also present
were Frank Achary, Bob Kramer, and yours truly.
- Due to a scheduling conflict, our Council was not
able to assist WYES TV at the 25th Annual International Beer
Tasting in June. We’re still available if the opportunity comes up
again. Thanks again to Brother Sal Giardina for all the ground work.
- We take this opportunity to salute members of the
E. D. White Council who work closely with the Boy Scouts, developing
them into upright citizens with good moral values and leadership
skills. Summer months are a busy time for these individuals as they
plan and organize field trips for the scouts. We want to recognize our
brother knights for their hard work and dedication: Mike Dwyer, Louis
Theriot, John Capretto, Paul Benedetto, Francis Nazareth, Jesse Lane,
Vernon Nordman.

Be Proud of
Being Catholic
(excerpts from an
article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman)
Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the
most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely
the Catholic Church?
Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at
the cost to your Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other
hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. Your graduates go on to
graduate studies at the rate of 92%, all at a cost to you. To the rest of
the Americans it's free.
The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment
of 700,000 students. The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of
637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5
people - not just Catholics - in the United States today.
But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the
Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia
on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the
institution of marriage.
Let me give you some figures that you as Catholics should know and remember.
For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual
intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual
contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8 % of clergywomen
reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually
harassed. Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of
pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of
pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.
A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and
find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the
choice, would choose to be priests again in the face of all this obnoxious
PR the church has been receiving.
The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted
wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily
the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward
priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now.
Walk with your shoulders high and your head higher. Be a proud member of the
most important non-governmental agency in the United States. Then remember
what Jeremiah said: 'Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient
paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls'.
Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and
reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions.
Be proud that you're a Catholic.
THOUGHT
FOR THE MONTH

chooses to remain anonymous.
