November  2008

Grand Knight  John Meyer

My Brother Knights,

Finished chemo last week and had my first ill effects: drop in my blood pressure and I’ve been dragging a bit.  Not complaining as this is the first time since April that I’ve had any appreciable trouble.  Having scans next week to see progress and I must once again say how much I appreciate each and everyone of you and all your help and prayers.  My brothers, you are a special lot….November 4, 2008 was a very important date in the history of our great country.  Hopefully we, as a part of history, elected a president who will make America strong, proud and save the lives of the unborn.  ….Many thanks to our social committee for setting up and arranging our Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday party on November 15th to be held in the PAC after the 4:30 Mass at SLKF.  Please RSVP to the committee by November 7th. …..Our appreciation to Agent Kirk for coming to our open meeting and giving a great presentation on what is available through our Insurance Program.  Thanks, Kirk. …Don’t forget to set aside some time on Sunday, November 2nd to help at the SLKF Fall Festival…. We have been approached to prepare 1,500 jambalaya diners for a hospital in our area.  This would be a great charity, as we normally do, but we will charge for the meals.  This could be a great fund raiser for the council…. November 1st is All Saints Day.     God Bless each and every one of you and yours.

Ladies Auxiliary Shirley Bonaccorso

The Auxiliary held their annual Bake/Taste Contest at the October 9th business meeting.  Thanks to all who participated.  Winners were Barbara Sanders for her Triple Lemon Delight and Ellen Falgoust for her Lemon Lush Pie.  These lucky ladies get to make their desserts again for the state competition to take place on Saturday, November 8th in Houma……..NOTICE:  The council and Auxiliary will be having a family Holiday Social on Saturday, November 15th in the PAC following the 4:30 PM Mass.  Food will be provided.  RSVP by November 7th (or as soon as you receive the newsletter) to John or Elaine Hauler, Ed or Ellen Falgoust, or Steve or Cheryll Thomas.  In addition, each attendee who wishes to participate in a gift exchange should bring a $5 gift, wrapped, of course. Additional information can be found in this newsletter…..Other activities scheduled for November include: November 2nd the monthly Rosary and Mass as well as the church parish FALL FEST (volunteers needed); Thursday, November 20th –  pillows at Jackie’s house at 6:30 PM (bring needles, thread and polyfill); looking ahead to December, Breakfast with Santa is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th and the Auxiliary will be cooking for the Bishop Ott  Shelter on Sunday, December 7th.  Volunteers welcome.  More about these at the business meeting…..Anyone wanting a new name badge, please let me know.  Pin-on badges run around $6; magnet backed closer to $9, depending on the current price list.  Also, if you would like to be added to the electronic notice list, I will need your e-mail address.  The next business meeting is Thursday, November 13th.   The Rosary is at 6:30 and the meetings begin at 7:30 PM.  See you there!!!!!

Heroes

By Jared Jenkins

In war, there are lives risked and lives taken

Men and women giving their best to defend what they love

They defend their country

Their honor

Their people

Some call them soldiers

Others call them heroes

Our veterans have risked their lives for us

They have lived through hell and fought with honor

Many have killed

And regret doing so

For every life, there is a soul

For every soul, there is a life

For those who have died, we show great appreciation and remembrance

For those who live, along with them live the horrific memories of battle

Some, memories of defeat

Some, memories of victory

Our veterans were more than soldiers

They were, and still are heroes
